曼德尔施塔姆，Осип Мандельштам，Osip Emilevich Mandelstam，1891—1938，俄罗斯诗人。生于华沙。童年在彼得堡度过。曾就读于彼得堡大学。1912年，与阿赫玛托娃、古米廖夫等人开创阿克梅主义文学流派。1933年，因写诗讽刺斯大林，次年遭逮捕和流放沃罗涅什。1937年回莫斯科，次年，再度遭逮捕，最后死于远东的集中营。著有诗集《石头》（1913）、《忧伤》（1922）、《Stikhotvoreniya 1921 – 1925》（1928）；散文集《时代的喧嚣》（1925）、《第四散文》（1930）、《亚美尼亚旅行记》（1933）；中篇小说《埃及邮票》（1928）；文艺评论集《论诗歌》（1928）、《关于但丁的谈话》（写于1933，出版于1967）等。另有《莫斯科笔记本》（1933—1934）、《沃罗涅什笔记本》（1980）。

that flight of cranes, long stretched-out line,

To an alien land, like a phalanx of cranes –
Foam of the gods on the heads of kings –
Where do you sail? What would the things
of <place wst="on"><city wst="on">Troy</city></place>, be to you, Achaeans, without Helen?

 

The sea, or Homer – all moves by love’s glow.
Which should I hear? Now Homer is silent,
and the <place wst="on">Black Sea</place> thundering its oratory, turbulent,
and, surging, roars against my pillow.

进入异国的土地，像一个鹤群的方阵——
皇帝头顶的诸神的泡沫——
你们要驶向何处？阿卡亚人②，如果没有海伦，
特洛伊的事物对你们来说意味着什么？

 

海，或荷马——被爱的灼热驱动，
我该听谁？此刻，荷马沉默，
黑海吼叫着雄辩术，骚动，
汹涌，靠着我的枕头轰鸣。

①此句，荀红军（菲野）译为“航海札记我读到一半”，刘文飞译为“我已将那些舰船的名册读到了半中”。两人均从俄语翻译，较可信，故此处英译疑有误，未将“读到”这一层意思翻译出来。本人不懂俄语，本译文只依据英译，先存疑。按照全诗的意思，此诗应为作者由于失眠而夜读荷马史诗写下的诗。全诗围绕“鹤群”（“船舰”）这一暗喻展开。


②阿卡亚人，Achaean，一译“亚加亚人”，古希腊四种主要居民之一。公元前2000年在希腊南部创造了著名的迈锡尼文化。在荷马史诗中，用作古希腊人的通称。



 


 

The Age


   
My beast, my age, who will try
to look you in the eye,
and weld the vertebrae
of century to century,
with blood? Creating blood
pours out of mortal things:
only the parasitic shudder,
when the new world sings. 

 

As long as it still has life,
the creature lifts its bone,
and, along the secret line
of the spine, waves foam.. 
Once more life’s crown,
like a lamb, is sacrificed,
cartilage under the knife -
the age of the new-born.

 

To free life from jail,
and begin a new absolute,
the mass of knotted days
must be linked by means of a flute.
With human anguish
the age rocks the wave’s mass,
and the golden measure’s hissed
by a viper in the grass.

 

And new buds will swell, intact,
the green shoots engage,
but your spine is cracked
my beautiful, pitiful, age.
And grimacing dumbly, you writhe,
look back, feebly, with cruel jaws, 
a creature, once supple and lithe,
at the tracks left by your paws.

我的野兽，我的时代，谁会努力
看你眼睛深处，
并且用血去焊接
世纪与世纪间的
脊椎？血在建设
它流自会死的生物：
只有寄生虫在抖动，
当新世界歌唱。

 

只要它还有生命，
生物就会举起骨头，
沿着脊柱的秘密
线条，摇曳着水沫。
生命的冠冕，再一次
被牺牲，就像一只羔羊，
刀下的软骨——
新生命的时代。

 

从牢狱中解放生命，
开始一个彻底的新时代，
大量扭结的日子
必须用笛子接在一起。
带着人类的苦难，
时代摇动大量的浪，
蝮蛇在草丛中
向金银珠宝发出嘶嘶声。

 

嫩芽会胀大，完好无损，
绿色的幼枝聚集，
但你的脊柱弄碎了
我美丽、可怜的时代。
你的脸沉默地扭曲，你因痛苦而打滚，
你用残酷的嘴虚弱地往回看，
一个生物，曾经柔软而敏捷，
在自己的爪印上。
