In 2011 as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day six women from the Asia Pacific Region join together to present their individual artworks that express their femininity and concerns.
The exhibition at Withspace Gallery at 798 Art District, opening on 21st May, features paintings and works on paper that emphasize the six artists’ dedication to the discipline of art making.
Soft and bright colours delicately placed and shaped on the surface of canvases form expressions of flora in the spring and summer periods of Korea. Kim In Ok and Eom Ok-Kyung seem to be saying “Please look at the beauty of our country, in all the glory of the seasons.” They are expressing the beauty of nature, colour and design.
Strong, rich and bold textures feature in the oil paintings of Chinese artists Cai Jin and Xu Xiaoyan. They are concerned with the changing environment that surrounds them. Their depictions of landscape elements may express destruction, pollution or sweeping plains of corn. The colors and brush strokes are vigorous and thick. There is much energy and spontaneity in the paintings.
Megan Cadd looks at the environment and the culture of her Aboriginal heritage. She finds objects and feathers to create collage on paper that is then photographed and highlighted to enhance the stories that we find hidden in the images. Denise Keele-bedford combines Australian and Chinese idioms to form a multi paneled wall installation. Chinese ink on paper, mark making and calligraphy are the focus of her artworks.
Korea, China and Australia are building relationships through government and industry. Modern technology brings the three countries close together where communication is instant. The countries are informed about each other but to visually engage with the artist’s expressions of their own and each others cultures enhances and deepens relationships.
