35) Poet inside the Fence
The poet is inside the fence, forever
And forever he is inside the fence beyond the lawn
The poet's gaze
The poet's gaze reaches the gray wooden fence outside the window
Then the bamboo and peach bushes in front of the fence
Through the gaps he looks up into the noisy sky
And at the children who will surely grow up
With each passing day, or month, or year
He will see them grow up and see them
Cross the river far away
He sees the sun rise and set in
And the moon appear and disappear
He listens to the church bell ringing
While on the river's other side the town market comes to life
The hunters with rifles
The businessmen with scales
The pawn shop owner with a pair glasses
He sees them busy with joy
Doing all that
He does not understand
Does not like at all
And is afraid of
The poet has grown up
Physically, yet his heart is locked
In the attic forever
The poet is inside the fence forever
And forever he stays in the attic reading
And looking at the world beyond the fence
He reads the faded colored clothed books and the pictures
That he finds in the attic, and he sees the poets before him
Looking too at the world from the attic
He sees those who grow up
And busy themselves in the market on the other side of the river
The hunters with rifles
The businessmen with scales
The boss with glasses on
Excited, busy, and happy
