王家新：诗人、批评家、翻译家，1957年生于湖北省丹江口市，武汉大学中文系毕业，2006年起被中国人民大学文学院聘任为教授、博士生导师。著有诗集、诗论集、随笔集和译诗集近五十种。其创作贯穿了当代诗歌四十多年的历程，被视为中国当代最重要的诗人之一。作品被译成多种文字出版，其中包括德文诗选《哥特兰的黄昏》《晚来的献诗》《日记诗》、克罗地亚文诗选《夜行火车》、荷兰文诗选《黎明的灰烬》以及由美国前桂冠诗人罗伯特·哈斯（Robert Hass)作序的英文诗选《变暗的镜子》等。最新英文诗集《与此同时》（At the Same Time）由波士顿阿罗史密斯出版社（Arrowsmith Press) 于2025年出版，译者为明德学院荣誉退休教授、美国文学翻译协会前会长约翰·巴罗康姆（John Balcom）。王家新曾多次应邀参加一些国际文学和诗歌活动，并在欧美一些大学讲学，做驻校诗人。曾获多种国内外诗歌奖、诗学批评奖和翻译奖，包括近年的花地年度诗人奖（2022）、首届“艾青诗歌奖”（2023）等。2021年退休后主要旅居于纽约，先后应荷兰文学基金会邀请在阿姆斯特丹做驻留作家（2022），在美国和加拿大一些大学、国际文学节、作家中心、图书馆讲学、朗诵和主持一些诗歌活动。

在威海，有人向我问起诗人多多
在威海的海岸上散步，眼望着远处的邮轮，
有人向我问起诗人多多。
我说他已从海南大学退休了，但没有退休金，
因为“他是一个外国人”。
“那他靠什么活？有没有人请他讲学？”
“他拒绝。他的傲气，你知道，‘整个英格兰
容不下我的骄傲……’”
“那他在北京住什么地方？”他租房，
（他父亲留下来的房子早已拆除）
他在那里写诗，读策兰，读夏尔，读他的
一贫如洗的茨维塔耶娃，
有时也画画，但也不是为了卖……
“唉，谁让他叫‘多多’呢，在国外他是多余的，
在国内他也是多余的”
诗人王桂林一声叹息，我们也都苦笑着；
抬起头来，海面上
那只白色邮轮已不知驶往何方。

At Weihai, Someone Asks Me about the Poet Duo Duo*
Strolling on the coast at Wehai, I gaze at a distant ship,
Someone asks me about the poet Duo Duo.
I say he has retired from Hainan University, but gets no pension,
Because “he is a foreigner.”
“What does he live on? Is he invited to lecture?”
“He refuses. His pride, you know ‘All of England cannot
Accommodate my pride...’”
“Where is he staying in Beijing, then?” He rents a place,
(They tore down the place he inherited from his father.)
He writes poems there, reads Celan, reads Char, reads his
Penniless Tsvetaeva,
Sometimes he paints, but not for money...
“Hey, why is he called Duo Duo, **or twice superfluous?
He’s superfluous abroad and just as superfluous at home.”
The poet Wang Guilin sighs, the rest of us force a smile;
I raise my head, and wonder where that
White ship on the sea has gone…

*Duo Duo, a renowned contemporary poet born in Beijing in 1951. In 1969, he went to the Baiyang Lake Production Brigade, where he started writing poetry. In 1989, he went into exile abroad for more than ten years, becoming a citizen of Holland. Later he was hired by Hainan University as a foreign professor.
**Duo Duo’s name is composed of two duo( 多)characters. The character duo (多)means superfluous.
在洞头
——给王子瓜，一位年轻诗友
当一具失踪多年的尸体从一个中学的
操场下、从一堆乱石下挖出来，
暴露在氧化的空气中，
我们在一个临海的山坡上谈诗。
我们谈着两代人的区别和联系，
谈着张枣和他的“万古愁”（现在它听起来
怎么有点像顺口溜？）
谈着那过去的被埋葬的许多年……
这是在中国东海，一个叫洞头的半岛上，
大海一次次冲刷着花冈岩石，
在我们言词的罅隙间轰鸣。
我们谈着诗，好像什么也没有发生。
我们谈着诗，而礁石上的钓者
把他的鱼钩朝更远处抛去。
我们谈着未来和我们呼吸的空气，渐渐地
那压在一具尸骨上的巨石
也压在了我们心上。
谈着谈着，我竟想起了张枣的一句话：
“既然生活失败了，诗歌为什么要成功呢？”
我们都不说话了。我们能听到的
唯有大海的冲刷声。
我们流泪，听着大海的冲刷声。

At Dongtou
—for Wang Zigua, a young poet
When the body of a person* missing for years was dug
From the rocks in a middle-school athletic field,
Exposed to the oxidizing air,
We were talking poetry on a slope overlooking the sea.
Going over the differences and connections between two generations,
Discussing Zhang Zao** and his “eternal sorrows” (Does it sound more
Like doggerel today?)
Talking about that which was buried for years....
On the Dongtou peninsula in the East China Sea,
The sea scoured the granite again and again,
Booming in the cracks between our words.
Talking poetry as if nothing else happened.
Talking poetry as the fisherman on the reef
Cast his line even farther out.
Talking about the future, and the air we breathe, gradually
The rocks that weighed on the bones of the dead
Also began to weigh on our hearts.
Talking and talking, I suddenly recalled a line by Zhang Zao:
“Since life is a failure, why must poetry succeed?”
We sat in silence. All we could hear
Was the sound of the pounding waves.
Through our tears, we listened to the scouring of the sea.

*Refers to a middle-school teacher in Huaihua City, Hunan. In 2003, having revealed the corruption involved in the construction of the school’s athletic field, he was murdered and buried under the playground. The body was found only in 2019 and reported by the media.

重读《古拉格群岛》
铁蒺藜、编号、高音喇叭、探照灯……
多年前读《古拉格群岛》，
最吸引我的，就是那些囚犯逃跑的故事；
似乎索尔仁尼琴写下这些，
就是为了让人们逃跑。

Barbed wire, code numbers, loudspeakers, searchlights...
Reading The Gulag Archipelago several years ago,
The stories of escaped prisoners fascinated me most;
Solzhenitsyn wrote them down
So that people might run away.
